Perfect Fit

The opening is just around the corner! The Perfect Fit: Shoes Tell Stories at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. Sunday June 14th 2 -5 pm

"The Perfect Fit: Shoes Tell Stories explores how shoes express ideas about gender, history, sexuality, race, class and culture. In this exhibition, artists create shoe-inspired art objects in clay, metal, fabric, wood, glass and paper, motivated by these same themes, and imparting their own vision in the process. This exhibition is curated by Wendy Tarlow Kaplan whose family has strong ties to Brockton's legendary shoe manufacturing industry."

I have three pieces of jewelry in this exhibition. Including my If the Shoe Fits… Bracelet. (above)

Ernesto Neto at the Armory

Last Thursday Megan Auman and I spent the day exhibit hopping in Manhattan. One of our stops was a trip to see Brazillian artist Ernesto Neto's exhibition at The Armory. Neto's Anthopodino encompased the entire interior hall - transforming the architectural space into a living, breathing installation.

It has an understructure comprised of a series of bone-like wooden supports with a see-through panty-hose-esque flesh pulled and stretched and drooping with holes and sacks. There were various "rooms" within the space and tunnels to walk through.

The hanging sacks are filled with various spices such as clove, black pepper, cumin, ginger, turmeric and lavender. Rice, gravel, sand, stones, glass beads, plastic balls, and foam are all used in the installation as well - adding to a beautiful sensory experience that makes you smile - despite the sensation that you may have been swallowed by a dinosaur.

Megan and I both wanted to have this giant bean-bag room in our home… SO comfy! If you're in the city, it's definitely an exhibit worth checking out. More info on the exhibit here and see more of his work here. BIG thanks to Megan for a fun and inspiring day!

catching up

I've been neglecting the blog for far too long my friends. My apologies. It's just that SO much is going on these days! I know I know, it's not fair not to share. So I'm going to make a more concerted effort to fit in more frequent blogging starting this week. I'll be better, I promise.

Last weekend was the BUST craftacular the Warsaw here in Brooklyn and despite the mediocre sales, it was a fun way to spend the afternoon. BIG thanks to Nina, Mia, Megan, Rachel, Tiffany, Mike, Jamie, Zack, Crystal and Kate… it was greet to see your friendly faces (and meet some of you for the first time after knowing you strictly in a virtual sense for some time now.) Also HUGE thanks to Dave for helping me out for the first half of the show, and my fabulous assistant Ashley for the second half - you guys rock!

In other exciting news… my Orange Blossoms Neckpiece is back in my own safe hands again! I had to pick it up from the Brooklyn property office this week where it has been held as evidence while the scammer, Adam Hershkowitz, was prosecuted. I was amazed to see it had not been damaged, beyond what looks like some wear around the hinges on the neckwire.

When the woman behind the caged counter top at the property office brought the necklace over to me wrapped in plastic, she had a puzzled look on her face. She said to me (in her thick Brooklyn accent): "I thought this was some kinda car part or somethin'. How the heck did he get this thing off your neck?!" "It's a looong story" I replied. She gave me a classic -oh honey, say no more, I know exactly what you mean, I've heard it all- look.

Despite the heartache and hassle of the whole ordeal, it has been an interesting experience - fortunately with a happy ending. I chuckle a bit to think of the journey this necklace has been on. From that first day in the precinct when I had to show the officers a photo of the necklace, to the grand jury courtroom when I had to describe what sort of jewelry I make for a living, to the pick-up clerk at the property office… I can't help but be amused when I think about all the hands this necklace has passed through in the past couple of months. Cops, lawyers, etc. - people who may never otherwise experience Art jewelry, have now seen images of and/or held a one-of-a-kind, Barbie doll and sterling silver necklace. I like to think of it as a bizarre "traveling exhibition" of sorts. I'm just glad the exhibition is now over.

I was also mentioned in the Houston Texas Chronicle newspaper back in April, their "Living Green" segment for Earth day. Many thanks to Maggie for sending me a copy.

Don't forget to come by the Warsaw on Sunday and say hello!

My Funk

These days I've been feeling at a loss for things to blog about - a direct result of My Funk. I've been feeling distant from my work. Bored, annoyed, and tired. Last week was full of avoidance. I did everything I possibly could to stay away from my studio. I was wallowing, feeling utterly uninspired. It's all part of the artist's life - a cliche I know, but it's a cliche for a reason: it's TRUE! Sometimes we get in funks with our work and we just can't look at it anymore.

My solution was to desperately seek out, hunt down and trap inspiration, hence my trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens last week. The flowers were beautiful, and the smells lush with spring renewal, but in all honesty, it didn't make me want to run home and sketch in my sketchbook. I came home with some pretty photos, and an overwhelming feeling of deflation. I wasn't any more inspired than I had been when I left. And what's more, I was annoyed that my plan to rejuvenate myself with nature didn't work. But sometimes when we try to FORCE inspiration, it doesn't want to show it's face. In fact, it heads in the complete opposite direction.

Instead I discovered the turning point to My Funk rather unexpectedly: this weekend, after a long shopping day in Manhattan with a friend, on my subway ride home. Glancing around me at all the people on the train, I noticed the diverse, distinctly unique faces and body types. The facial features, expressions, nose shapes, eye glasses, hairstyles, skin tones, etc. I was struck by the intense individual beauty of everyone on the train.

PEOPLE are what inspire and fascinate me. It's always been true and is part of why I love living in NYC so much. Perhaps it should have been more obvious to me, and my day at the gardens could have been replaced with a $2 metrocard and a few hours on the train. But then… maybe I needed to be reminded at precisely the right moment, when inspiration was least expected, when I wasn't seeking it out, or paying it any attention, so that it could make it's grand re-entrance back into my life.

Thankfully I'm back at it full force in my studio this week, and ready to conquer the tasks at hand. I'll be back soon with the photos to prove it.

Thanks for reading!

Spring Lovelies

I've been seeking out the sights and smells of spring lately and made a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to visit the amazing cherry blossoms this week (the ever-popular annual cherry blossom festival opens there this weekend.)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
