Custom Order: Bridesmaids Gifts

Further evidence that I'm not the only one with a 'spring green' color obsession! This collection of custom Smile Necklaces was made for a wonderful client getting married later this month. She commissioned them as gifts for each of her bridesmaids. In her initial email to me, she mentioned she already owned a necklace of mine that was quite special to her…

"When my fiance and I first started dating we saw your work at CraftyBastards in Adams Morgan (DC) I loved it, he surprised me with it a few weeks later, and its really the one gift I always smile at from him."

I feel honored to have been chosen to contribute to their special day! The first step in the custom design process is picking out the Barbie elements. So I picked out a bunch of red lip Barbie doll grins from my stash and emailed a photo of them to the client so she could personally choose which ones she wanted to use.

Next we chose the resin. Her bridesmaids will be wearing dresses in various shades of red (pomegranate, poppy, watermelon, etc) and "new growth green" is a part of her wedding palette as well, so she requested spring green resin surrounds to really pop off the red dress colors. I think they turned out lovely… hopefully she and all her gals will think so too!

Custom Brooch complete!

I have to admit, this piece is going to be REAL hard to part with. I'm thrilled with how it turned out and tempted to keep it for myself! Oh well, at least it will be going to a fellow redhead (I know the greens will look fantastic with her hair!) This piece was SO much fun to make. I love it when clients give me the creative freedom to run wild with an idea. Many thanks to Jean for the custom commission!

Progression of a custom commission

I thought I would share some of the progressions of a custom piece I've been working on lately…

(the lovely green eye is from this amazing Barbie doll I won on eBay a while back)

Today I'll be working on making the pin back and pendant bail. It will have the ability to be worn as both a brooch or a necklace.

The area colored black is from a sharpie marker. I'm toying with the idea of cutting those areas out (to create some negative space within the piece.) The rest of the recessed areas will get filled in with various shades of green/blue resins. More progress pics to follow soon. What do you all think?

My PLASTIC collaboration with Mattel Inc.

As you may know, I've been working very hard this year on a top secret project… well, today is the day I get to finally announce my BIG news: my collaboration with Mattel!

I've partnered with the Barbie's parent company as part of their PLASTIC Collection, a series of art, accessories, apparel and décor for sale in limited editions. Various designers including myself, Jonathan Adler, Philippe Starck, etc. were commissioned by Mattel to celebrate their affection for Barbie and all things plastic in this new catalog geared towards the adult Barbie admirer.

The collection debuts today May 4, 2010 on www.barbiecollector.com/plastic. If the print catalog hasn't already arrived in your mailbox you may also request one by calling: 1-800-491-7514

I brought back my Pinwheel Vintage Shoe Rings © specifically for this collaboration so they're available in extremely limited supply …once they're gone, they're gone. The rings are made of vintage reproduction plastic Barbie doll open-toe shoes, re-imagined into a pinwheel shaped cocktail ring atop a sterling silver ring band. Available in red, white and black for $235 (includes shipping and handling) specify ring size upon ordering and please allow up to 12 weeks for delivery. Order online: www.barbiecollector.com/plastic or call 1-800-491-7514

(As reported on Lady and the Blog):

… "In addition to releasing one-of-a-kind pieces from the Barbie Archives, Mattel has teamed up with top designers like Jonathan Adler, Philippe Starck for Kartell and Margaux Lange to show the world that life in plastic truly is fantastic. The designers have tapped into Barbie’s pop culture icon status and fashion heritage, offering true collectibles from around the world, including:

* French Designed “Objet D’Art” Barbie Foosball Table: $25,000
* Jonathan Adler “1959 Barbie Mirror” Hand-created for Barbie’s “Real” Malibu Dream House: $8,800
* Barbie Pop Art (First in a series): $750
* “Dream a Neon Dream” Ultra Hip Barbie Neon Sign (in bright pink: $2500
* Limited Edition Comme Des Garcons dolls: $350
* “Fancy Footwear” Barbie Shoes Ring by Margaux Lange: $235

(My work appears in the print catalog right next to the 1978 Dream House on the back page - which I totally had the later version of in pink as a kid - awesome.)

Oh and Psst! In addition to the Plastic Shoe Rings, more jewelry from my collection will be available for purchase online through BarbieCollector.com in the coming weeks so be sure to check back for that. This is a really exciting collaboration for me, and I'm super proud of it. I hope you're as enthused as I am!
