Asia's Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Review

Asia's Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Review is an industry quarterly published in Asia covering design trends, manufacturing news, retail market reports, etc. It is distributed at fashion shows all over Asia as well as overseas. I was featured in a 6 page spread focused on jewelry made from up-cycled materials. When the magazine arrived, I was also pleased to discover I was alongside friend and fellow jewelry artist Liana Kabel from Australia.

vegetable ivory

Jeweler Delphine Jaulhac's father was a sculptor who spent years working with ivory. While she employs many of the same techniques, she has chosen an entirely different, more sustainable material similar to elephant ivory: tagua nuts (otherwise known as vegetable ivory.) I was first introduced to this material during my Wooden Jewelry class and am in absolute awe of the beauty Delphine has been able to carve out of it.

I got in!

Two exciting bits of news to report…
My Silver Shoes Bracelet has been accepted into the upcoming Lark Books Publication 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs curated by Susan Sloan. (This will be the third of Lark's 500 Series books that I've been published in so far, woohoo!)

Also I found out yesterday that my application to the BUST Spring Fling Craftacular was accepted.

This will be the first craft show I've done since the American Craft Council show back in February '08. I'm a bit nervous but also excited. I decided to bite the bullet and apply to the Spring Fling because a.) I live so close, and b.) it's an indoor show and c.) a one-day-only event. Better start preparing!

Out of the old, into the new

Well, it was a bittersweet goodbye. This week I moved out of my lovely large studio:

…into a lovely new one that's about half the size:

I'm still in the same building, however I'm on a different floor now. It only has one window as opposed to four in my previous space, but it is A LOT cheaper. Dave and I are trying to save as much money as possible right now, and I know this sacrifice will help us out financially. It was either downsize or get a studio mate and in the end I decided that I really didn't want to share my space with anyone else, I love working alone!

I'm really pleased with the new space. I was able to fit everything in (amazingly!) Despite having less natural light, it does have better overhead lighting, a ceiling fan (hooray) and because it faces a different direction in the building the afternoon sun will not be beating down directly in my face in the spring/summer months. I'm glad to be staying in the same building because it's VERY safe and secure, and only 5 blocks from my apartment - can't beat that commute.

Downsizing has helped me to shed some unnecessary stuff I had been accumulating and luckily I'm a very organized person so the narrowness of this new space wasn't really an issue for me. Off to go put it to good use now!

The Crime Update

Adam Hershkowitz was finally caught and put in jail for his elaborate fraud scam, litigated by the DA's office. I've been wondering how to write about it here on the blog, how much detail to go into, etc and this post has gone through many drafts as a result of my hesitations. After a lot of thought I've decided to keep this brief, as a matter of safety for all people involved in the case. This whole experience has been so surreal; like a strange, slightly less dramatic episode of Law & Order, I never would have imagined I would be wrapped up in a situation like this with my jewelry!

The short story goes like this: Adam was finally arrested on April 2nd, thanks to two amazingly brave women. The women work for a company in nyc that had been scammed by Adam as well. When he would not return their goods, they googled his name and found my original blog post about the scam, and immediately took it upon themselves to go to his apartment and demand their stuff back. And because they had seen the photo of my necklace on my blog, they were able to retrieve it that same day along with their own goods! (hooray for blogging making a difference eh?!)

I'm grateful to these women for their bravery, and grateful to the DA's office for jumping on the case and prosecuting this scumbag so quickly. I am thankful the ordeal is over with, that he's getting what he deserves, and frankly am amazed that the necklace is coming back to me. It's not in my possession just yet however - the lawyers have to hang on to it a bit longer as evidence, but it feels good to know that it's safe and will be returned to me soon.

Thankfully now I can focus on my life and my work again, learn from the experience and move forward.

Thanks for reading!

*NOTE*Adam was released on bail last week and is now apparently reading my blog. He left some nasty comments which I've reported and removed from this posting.
