Ideas take flight

Blue skies and clear here in Brooklyn today, high in the 80's. The final days of summer are upon us. I'm ready for autumn, my favorite season. I can't wait to bundle up in sweaters and smell the crisp, fallen leaves.

The change of season has been leading to some new-found inspiration. I've been designing some concepts for my upcoming exhibition this winter at Facéré Jewelry Art Gallery in Seattle. If all goes well, Dave and I are planning to attend the opening and have a little vaca on the west coast while we're at it… visit some friends, etc.

For the first time ever, I'm considering adding some gold elements into my work. I'm becoming more familiar with and inspired by 18k these days (most likely due to my current employ as a goldsmith.) I've even considered adding some gemstones… a ruby gracing the hand of a barbie doll perhaps? Exploring notions of value, worth, preciousness… hmm, this could be very exciting and appropriately timed…

I think this is a fab idea - the contrast in value is something that appeals to me too. Plastic and gold - what could be better?

I used to only like white metals also d, ie: silver, white gold and platinum (of course!) but I've begun to see yellow gold in a whole new light and I'm diggin' it. I've always liked the look of blackened silver (liver of sulfur patina) with yellow gold. One of my favorite metalsmiths, Todd Reed, often uses it and it works beautifully together. I rarely do work without this patina so I think the gold will really pop and look lovely. Now I just need to make sure I can afford to work with it!
